Emotional attachments can derail our destiny and even destroy our lives. We were designed to attach to whatever and whoever we associate with over a prolonged period of time. This works in our favor when we are in The perfect will of The Almighty. However on the other hand it can be extremely detrimental if we get attached to toxic things or people.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord/Almighty, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29 v 11
Ideally every major decision we make about our lives should be directed by The Ruach Hakodesh/Holy Spirit and the word. This is not easy to accomplish however as we are rebellious by nature. So we like to do what we want to do. So like Sinatra we say ” I did things my way.” The ties and attachments we form when we do things our way often has lasting consequences that get in the way, even when we try to repent and turn around. We end up with soul ties and addictions which are very hard to get rid of.
Abraham was told by The Almighty that he was going to have a son. His wife felt she was too old and convinced him to have a son with her maid servant Hagar. He did and then when Sarah got pregnant and had the promised son, Hagar became unpleasant and had to be sent away from the camp. To this day the descendants of Ismael and Issaac are at odds.
Unless it is the Almighty who builds the house, the builders’ work is pointless. Unless it is the Almighty who protects the city, the guard on duty is pointless.
Psalm 127v 1
Proximity breeds attachment
The children of Israel were slaves in Egypt for years and they got accustomed to the food and the way of life. They were so oppressed that they cried out for deliverance. However when they were delivered and had to eat different food. They quickly started to complain that they wanted to go back. This is explained by psychologists as Stockholm syndrome.
Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response. It occurs when hostages or abuse victims bond with their captors or abusers. This psychological connection develops over the course of the days, weeks, months, or even years of captivity or abuse.
This attachment to their past made it impossible for them to move forward, into their destiny, the land flowing with milk and honey. So although they were physically delivered they were still emotionally attached. This is a common phenomenon, soul ties are real . People move on from abusive relationships and are unable to be free emotionally. This limits their capacity to become attached to a new partner. Just by virtue of how we were designed it is really ideal if we can only attach to the right things and people. I have seen children who are only fed vegetables, fruits and grain and no processed food become attached to them and have no desire for cake and ice cream.
Are our attachments Idols?
“I am the Ahayah your Elohim/ LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 7You shall have no other gods/ mighty ones before Me…..Deuternomy 5 v 7.
One of the issues we face when we do our own thing , especially when we know better: is that in order to fully repent we will need to detach and give up the things and people we attached to without his permission, if they are hindering his plans for us. As in the case of Hagar and Ishmael. Ezra also had the priest send away their foreign wives when he was calling Israel to repentance. They had knowingly gone against His will and in order to repent they had to undo what they had done.
Now let us make a covenant before our God/The Almighty to send away all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord/Almighty and of those who fear the commands of our God/ Elohim. Let it be done according to the Law. 4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”
Ezra 10 v 3-5
Our initiation into the kingdom will always involve sacrificing our dearest possession, because He wants to be in that place. This is why the rich young ruler was told to sell everything he had, in order to enter the kingdom. The messiah says it best. “If any man come to Me and hate not his father and mother, and wife and children, and brethren and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.” Luke 14 v 26.
The pleasure of rebellion is not worth it
The prodigal son learned the hard way that there was a price to be paid for self engineered living. Indeed There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. No matter what version of the Bible I use, the message is the same. There is a way that seems right, but it leads to death….Proverbs 14:12: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
I had to learn the hard way like the prodigal did, and so I have pledged to tell everyone who will listen that before making any major decisions in life one should make a decision to turn their will and their lives over to the care of The Almighty/God. Like The Messiah did , “Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” His plan is far superior to any that we can come up with. He will not violate our will by manipulation and so we must freely decide to give Him the permission to have His way with us.
The hardest prayer to pray is your will be done on Earth as it is in heaven, but it is the most effective. Because it shows that we have truly surrendered our will and only desire His. No plans we make without His guidance can be superior to His. Why not just wait upon Him, instead of allowing our flesh and our feelings to ruin our lives.
