Our body was designed to function at its best when the thyroid which helps to regulate the endocrine system is operating at its best. Our endocrine system regulates our hormones and keep us healthy. Anything that disrupts that can make us very sick.
Research shows that there could be a link between sickness and the endocrine system
In the last two decades there has been a growing awareness of the possible adverse effects in humans and wildlife. From exposure to chemicals that can interfere with the endocrine system. These effects can include:
- developmental malformations,
- interference with reproduction,
- increased cancer risk; and
- disturbances in the immune and nervous system function.
It is therefore in our best interest to stay away from ingesting chemicals. This means we must make a deliberate effort to watch what we eat and use on our bodies.
How to avoid endocrine inhibitors
Here are some items that we should avoid if possible, because they can have an adverse effect on our endocrine system:
Parabens are a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Chemically, they are a series of parahydroxybenzoates or esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid. Often found in deodorants, shampoos and polyester fabrics and is known to mimic estrogen. A good substitute is deodorants without aluminum , shampoos with no sulfates and phosphates and cotton and linen clothing.
BHA and BHT BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are also widely used by the food industry as preservatives. These mainly to prevent oils in foods from oxidizing and becoming rancid, found in gum and make up. We should go for natural make up such as bare minerals and chemical free gum. I have stopped wearing make up unless I am doing a photo shoot.
UV Filters found in sunscreen while blocking the suns harmful rays could be sending toxins to tour endocrine system as well. Try using more natural sunscreen like sun bum that is good for you.
BPA is found in plastic containers and food packaging and can leach into foods at room temperature or above. It has been associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, reproductive dysfunction and altered immunity. I have been using glass containers or those that are BPA free the investment is worth it.
We are what we eat
Pesticides are found in many foods, water and soil and is said to have some co-relation to ADHD. Therefore organically grown foods including those grown in our own back yard are much more safe for us. In general eating foods grown without pesticides and packaged without harmful preservatives can go a far way in keeping us healthy.
