There is a very popular statement among preachers and some believers that “The Law”, which is also known as the commandments is done away. Firstly, let us be clear since sin is the transgression of the law, you can’t banish the law and still have sin. What you would have is anarchy. Imagine a country with no laws, the citizens then would be free to live as they please at the expense of their neighbor without consequence.
However there was “a book of the law” that was given to Isreal when they broke covenant. Which is separate and apart from the Book of the Covenant. Israel broke the covenant The Almighty had made with them. In order to preserve them as a nation they were given ” The Law” outside of a covenant. Under this “book of the law” they had the Levitical priesthood instead of the priesthood after the order of Melchizedek. This is what they used until Messiah came and died to restore the Melchizedek priesthood.
This “Book of the law” is what Paul referred to a lot in his writing , because this is what they were under before Messiah came. Messiah established a new covenant in his blood that reverted to obedience of the commandments from the heart.
For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”[l]11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” Galatians 3 v 10
After Moses finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord/Almighty: 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord /Almighty your God/Elohim. There it will remain as a witness against you. 27 For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord/Almighty while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die!
deut 31 v 24-26
And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God/Elohim. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the Lord/Almighty.
josh 24 v 26
Laws are boundaries
The Almighty in His wisdom set in place laws/boundaries, that are in effect whether we obey them or not. When we obey them we are blessed when we disobey we are cursed. But this was meant to be inside of a covenant relationship. Not standing alone like it was under The book of the law.
A covenant is an agreement between two parties or more. They usually include conditions for benefits and consequences for breaking the agreement. After they are ratified, they become binding until the conditions are violated. They usually therefore include boundaries/laws/commandments.
There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Almighty made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.
1 kings 8 v 9
A boundary is an imaginary line that separates me from you. It separates your physical space, your feelings, needs, and responsibilities from others. Your boundaries also tell other people how they can treat you – what’s acceptable and what isn’t. Without boundaries, people may take advantage of you because you haven’t set limits about how you expect to be treated. What Are Boundaries and Why Do I Need Them? – Live Well with Sharon Martin
Even earthly relationships function in a much healthier way when boundaries are known and respected. Without boundaries there is the likelihood of abuse through manipulation and control.
Adam violated the boundaries that had been set for him by The Almighty. Mankind has been born in sin (Transgressors of the law) and shaped in iniquity (habitual/inherited sinful tendencies). So, we are all born with evil inclinations. Yes, The Messiah died to deliver us from sin. But we are charged with working out our own salvation with fear and trembling.
[19] For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: Mathew 15 v 19Knowing the law is important
The Almighty in His wisdom gave man boundaries in order to facilitate a relationship with Him. He wanted us to know how to please Him and how to treat each other. These boundaries are referred to in the scriptures as laws statutes and commandments. A boundary is never taken away, it remains in place to establish a clear distinction between individuals and their rights. In the case of the divine laws they remain in place to let us know when we cross the line, and the consequences go into effect when we do.
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
mathew 5 17-20
Since the law is a boundary, we can clearly see from the physical realm that fences help us to know when we have crossed over into our neighbors’ yard. Knowing the law means we know when we sin, which is why The Most high wants it written in our hearts.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
2 peter 1v5
His divine power has given us everything we need for a righteous life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
2 peter 1 v 3-4
What are these great and precious promises? Every law/commandment/boundary has a blessing or curse attached to them. The Blessings can definitely be referred to as promises. Literally the promises are meant to help us to guard our hearts. They inspire us to seek to use our faith to access the power we need to obey so we can have self control and ultimately love. The end our objective of the law is love.
For this is the alove of Elohim, that we bkeep his commandments: and his commandments are not cgrievous.
1 john 5 v 3
It is the law that converts the soul
Those of us with children know that unless children are given boundaries with consequences they do not change their behavior. In psychology Operant conditioning is the process of learning through reinforcement and punishment. In operant conditioning, behaviors are strengthened or weakened based on the consequences of that behavior.
The law of the Almighty is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Almighty is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the Almighty are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Almighty is pure, enlightening the eyes.
psalm 18 v 7-12
The only thing that changed from the old covenant to the new is that Yahsya/Jesus is now our high priest and our sacrificial lamb. Obedience is still required but now we have a high Priest in heaven interceding for us and His blood that forgives our sin as we confess. We also have The Holy Spirit that gives us the strength to overcome sin, so that His nature can be manifested through us. We have just been given all the help we need not to sin, so we can have all the blessings connected to the law/commandments.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
Galations 5 v 22- 23
Since sin proceeds from the heart, in order to fix the problem righteousness has to also proceed from the heart. The law when written on our hearts in our conscience polices the heart and help us live a life of no sin.
Therefore, since Messiah suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of Elohim.
1 peter 4 v1
The law helps us to make a distinction between good and evil
The Most high has used laws/boundaries/rules from the beginning . He told Adam what he could eat and what he should not, or he would die. A proper boundary tells us what is required of us and the consequences if we disobey. This put Adam in a position to choose his own destiny and that aligns with how he had designed man. As an autonomous being to have dominion over the animals, and the earth. In keeping with this design, he gave him the opportunity to make an informed decision between good and evil,
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Almighty; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a Elohim, and they shall be to me a people:
hebrews 8 v 9
Another purpose for the boundaries/laws is that it determines whether we love The Almighty or not. If a young woman is being pursued by a suitor and she sets a boundary that he must observe in order to have her hand in marriage. Example pay her father a bride price of $10,000. If he loves her he will try to fulfill her requirements. Hence this is why The Almighty says if we love Him, we will keep his commandments.
“If you love me, keep my commands.
john 14 v15
It is important for us to be programmed with the commandments in our hearts because that is where desires are formed. Without the genuine desire to obey we become hypocritical and legalistic. This also is often associated with the religious spirit, which the messiah accused the pharisees of.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.
Mathew 23 v 27
2 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is Elohim works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
phillipians 2 v12-13
Obeying the law makes us a dwelling place for The Father
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
john 14 v 21
Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the Almighty .
2 Blessed are those who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart—
3 they do no wrong
but follow his ways.
4 You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed.
5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast
in obeying your decrees!
6 Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.
7 I will praise you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous laws.
8 I will obey your decrees;
psalm 119 v 1 – 5
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But Elohim be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of Elohim, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
romans 6v 11-22
The commandments cause us stay in His love, and to love each other.
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
john 15 v 9-10
This is my command: Love each other.
john 15 v 17
The commandments help us to love The Father and have His favor
Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus/Yashya said unto him, Thou shalt love the Almighty thy Elohim with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it*, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Mathew 22 v 35-40
…but whose delight is in the law of the Almighty,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
john 15 v 8
If we have a neighbor and we keep trespassing into their yard after a while it will bring enmity and strife . But if we respect their boundary this will help us to be best of friends.
The commandment keeps us set apart/holy
How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
12 Praise be to you, Ahayah;
teach me your decrees.
13 With my lips I recount
all the laws that come from your mouth.
14 I rejoice in following your statutes
as one rejoices in great riches.
15 I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.
16 I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.
psalm 119 v 9-16
It acts as a light so we can see which way to go
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
that I will follow your righteous laws.
107 I have suffered much;
preserve my life, Lord/ Ahayah, according to your word.
psalm 119 v 105-107
For this command is a lamp,
this teaching is a light,
and correction and instruction
are the way to life,
keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,
from the smooth talk of a wayward woman
proverbs 6 v 23-24
The law rewrites the conscience
The Spirit will use our conscience to speak to us, but our conscience has to have a code of ethics/law embedded in it in order for that to work. …”
…..in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,”
Romans 2 v 15
“I am telling the truth in Mashyach/Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit,” Romans 9 v 1.
The Holy Spirit agrees with the word on The Most High’s behalf, while the conscience agrees on mankind’s behalf. Without two parties we can’t have a covenant.
The Bible tells us that the conscience can be dead or evil.
“let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” Hebrews 10v22
“how much more will the blood of Christ/Messiah, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to Elohim cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living Elohim/God?” Hebrews 9 v 14
The conscience is the part of the heart through which The Holy/Set apart spirit speaks. It is therefore important that it be kept clean. When the laws are written in the heart the conscience alerts us and makes us uncomfortable when we sin/transgress against the commandments.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God/Elohim, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Mashyach; [6] And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 cor. 10 v 5
The commandment leads us to eternal life
And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God/Elohim: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus/Yashya said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Mathew 19 v 16 – 19
For everything that was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope.
romans 15 v 4
See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16 For I command you today to love the Almighty your Elohim, to walk in obedience to him. And to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Almighty your Elohim will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.
17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods/idols and worship them. 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.
The commandments are a witness
19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live . Deuteronomy 30 v 15-20.
They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” Deuteronomy 32 v 47
My son, do not forget my law,
But let your heart keep my commands;
2 For length of days and long life
And peace they will add to you.
proverbs 3 v 1-2
The Messiah showed us how to keep The law
9 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Here we see that the commandments that were given to Moses was upgraded to include the heart. This is what is required of us in order to be in covenant with The Almighty. These are His boundaries. The Messiah kept them and pleased His Father.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
hebres 4 v 15
Sin which is disobedience of the law starts in the heart
Sin happens when we entertain evil thoughts longer than we should, sometimes because we are not aware of the consequences and don’t believe we can have victory.
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And Elohim is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
1 corinthians 19 v 13
Its the law/word that if hidden in our hearts that alert us to the fact that the thought is evil. And then it is by faith/trust in The Almighty that we access His divine power to overcome. Without the law we cannot know what sin is. And if we do not know what sin is we can’t use our faith to eradicate it.
When Paul spoke of not relying on the law to save us he was saying that in itself and by itself it cannot save us. But without it we would not know what sin is. It helps to condition our minds and hearts to desire to obey.
To belittle its importance, in our opinion. shows a lack of understanding of the process of regeneration. As well as what laws are used for.
